Wednesday, 3/24 "Death by Scrabble"

Read "Death by Scrabble" and complete the reading guide.  If you're absent, turn in the work in Canvas.

Definitions for Notes:
Atmosphere: the overall feeling of a story. Focuses on mood rather than tone. Focuses on description and language rather than action.
Situational Irony: the surprise ending--when what happens is not what you expected.
This is an ending that has an unexpected plot twist.

Tuesday, 3/23/21

Today is my reentry day, and I just want to make sure you've completed all work from my absence. This includes questions from "The Bet," the gambling article, procrastination articles (DLD), and the coach book. Post questions and confusion you have about assignments in Canvas.
Here is a list of what you should have completed each day:
Monday, 3/15/21
I can identify and analyze important elements of a story.
Copies Needed: “The Bet” with Questions
  • Read story with your partner.
  • While reading, stop to ANNOTATE by marking/noting questions you have and connections you make in the margins of the short story.  There should be significant annotations—this is part of your grade.
Draw and label a plot diagram for the story that includes the following:
  • Exposition (characters, setting, background)
  • Inciting incident
  • Rising action
  • Climax
  • Falling action
  • Resolution/denouement
Note:  if you finish, you may begin the questions.

Tuesday, 3/16/21
I will determine how a theme is developed, including how it takes shape by specific details. I know I have an understanding when I can formulate a non-cliche theme and provide specific details that justify my reasoning.
Copies Needed: “The Bet” Tweet Storm
  • Complete the “The Bet” Tweet Storm
  • Answer questions that follow the story
  • For discussion questions, use the RACE strategy.
  • On your own paper, write a theme statement for the story, and provide justification from the story for this theme using specific details from the story. You will need to provide one from the beginning, middle and end.  You do not have to quote the short story, rather you can refer to the specific details. Your job is to show the progression of the theme.
Wednesday, 3/17/21
I can analyze how two texts develop similar themes and topics.
Copies Needed: “How the Brain Gets Addicted to Gambling”
  • Read “How the Brain Gets Addicted to Gambling”
  • Answer the attached questions.
Thursday, 3/18/21 –  DLD
You may take/retake to improve your grade.
Friday, 3/19/21  -  Tuesday, 3/22/21
  • Retake Canvas DLD assignment to improve your score.
  • Read coach book pages 74 - 77 and answer questions 1 – 4 on pp. 80 -81
Read pages 82 -101 and answer the following questions:
  • 1 -6 on pp. 85-87
  • 1 – 4 on pp. 93 – 95
  • 1 – 6 on pp. 98 - 101

Monday, 3/22/21

Today should be my last day at home. I'm looking forward to my return tomorrow, but I'm still feeling rather weak.  Please be sure to complete the coach book assignment posted in Canvas for today.

Also, be sure you've completed last week's readings and work associated with the following two texts:
  •  "The Bet" short story
  • The article about gambling

The paired reading assignment from Thursday may be taken multiple times, and I will count the highest score. Doing well on it requires careful reading and analysis. Take your time, and be sure to read and reread the text and questions.

Thursday, 3/18/21: DLD & Friday, 3/19/21

Read the two passages and answer the questions. When you click to begin, you will see both passages and questions. Take your time and go back to the text.  You can take the quiz more than one time. The highest score will be counted.

Be sure you've completed all assignments thoroughly for this week. There WILL be an assessment over the story "The Bet" and the paired article next week.
